Improve AI search visibility by publishing accurate shop facts, checking search access, and reviewing recorded answers against evidence. Generative engine optimization (GEO) does not give a shop control over recommendations. Treat each answer as an observation from a specific system at a specific time.
Start with facts a driver can verify
Maintain a public source for the shop name, location, contact details, opening hours, services, accepted vehicles, and current qualifications. Add the conditions that affect the customer decision. A warranty statement, for example, should include the terms that the shop can support.
Put each fact on the relevant public page. Keep the same facts consistent across your website and business profiles. A private record can help your team verify information, but publishing a private record inside a tool does not establish that a search engine has accessed it.
Separate search access from training permission
OpenAI documents separate controls for OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot. Blocking model-training access does not require blocking ChatGPT search access. Allowing a crawler is an access decision, not a guarantee that the shop will appear in an answer.
Review the effective robots rules before adding a named group. A wildcard rule can already allow the public pages. Ask your hosting provider to check whether legitimate search requests are challenged or blocked. A test that merely uses a bot name does not prove that genuine crawler traffic can pass.
| User agent | Purpose | Practical decision |
|---|---|---|
| OAI-SearchBot | Search results in ChatGPT | Check applicable robots rules and hosting access |
| GPTBot | Content that may be used for model training | Choose training permission separately |
| ChatGPT-User | Some user-initiated requests | Do not treat a visit as proof of search inclusion |
| Googlebot | Google Search crawling | Check page access and indexing controls |
Use public pages as the main publishing surface
Answer the questions customers actually ask: which vehicles you service, whether an inspection is required, how approvals work, and how to contact the right location. Use headings, readable text, and direct links to the relevant service pages.
Google says its AI search features use the same SEO foundations as Search. It does not require special AI files or special schema. Its June 2026 clarification says llms.txt has no positive or negative effect on Google Search visibility or rankings. Keep that file only when a specific system uses it; do not describe file generation as a ranking improvement.
Run a repeatable answer check
A provider API response is evidence about that API request. It does not establish what every driver sees in a consumer app. A later correction in an answer also does not prove which source caused the change. Systems, retrieval, and context can change between checks.
- Choose a small set of questions covering shop facts, service fit, and local discovery. Keep the exact wording.
- Record the system, date, location context, and whether the check used a consumer interface or a provider API.
- Save the answer and its cited sources. Record failures and missing answers as well as successful responses.
- Compare factual claims with dated, authoritative shop information. Mark unsupported claims as unverified.
- Correct the relevant public source after the shop approves the facts. Record what changed.
- Repeat the same questions later and report the observed differences with their limits.
Measure mentions, citations, and inquiries separately
A mention names the shop. A citation links to a source. A referral sends a visitor to your website. An inquiry starts a customer conversation. Report each event under its own name and retain the underlying evidence.
For a small evaluation, report counts with denominators: “The shop appeared in 3 of 12 completed checks.” State how many checks failed and which systems were tested. Do not turn that number into market share, consumer reach, or a booking forecast.
Use the linked study protocol to define the questions and review rules before comparing results. That makes the work easier to repeat and helps prevent favorable examples from becoming the whole report.
